Call for papers - «Perspectives on socialisation at nursery school» study day, 2nd edition, with Eric Plaisance

The second edition of the « Perspectives on socialisation in nursery school »will be held at Campus Condorcet on Monday 9 March 2026, in the presence of’Eric Plaisance,to mark the fortieth anniversary of the publication of his book, The child, nursery school and society (PUF, 1986).
This day is organised by Christophe Joigneaux, Ghislain Leroy and Ariane Richard-Bossez.
This study day follows on from the first edition, which took place in 2019 at Paris 8 University (Study day: «Perspectives on socialisation at nursery school» 18 June 2019 - Paris 8 University - CIRCEFT). To mark the 40th anniversary of the publication of Éric Plaisance's seminal work, l'Enfant, la maternelle, la société (PUF, 1986), and in his presence, this second edition will review developments in nursery schools and the sociological and socio-historical work devoted to them. Jean-Claude Chamboredon emphasised the importance of studying how “the overall variations in the values and educational aims” of nursery schools relate to “changes in the demand for early childhood education” (Chamboredon, 1988, p. 83). For his part, Jean-Noël Luc (1988) stated: “This is an indispensable reference study for anyone interested in the recent past of the French nursery school. It is also a useful milestone in research, since it invites us to compare the patterns identified among certain Parisian teachers between 1945 and 1980 with the results of future surveys for other periods or using other samples and other sources”. Four decades on, the presentations that will punctuate this day will undoubtedly help to illustrate these remarks and to envisage a long-term diachronic reflection on the evolution of the nursery school, by situating its present in relation to its past. To this end, proposals for papers may fall into one of the following three areas:
- Axis 1: What changes are taking place in the professions at nursery school?
- Area 2: Sociology of teaching and educational practices in nursery schools
- Theme 3: Nursery schools and other forms of child socialisation: the question of social definitions of the child
