The field of higher education and research (ESR) in France is now beginning to be well analysed from the perspective of social inequalities and their evolution in general. It is much less well analysed from the perspective of discrimination, an issue that is the subject of ambiguous institutional recognition and a scientific assessment that is still in its infancy. Political recognition, scientific knowledge and public action therefore need to be built simultaneously on a major issue that has so far been neglected. This article explores these issues in order to lay the foundations for national research on discrimination and the articulation of social relations in the academic field. The ACADISCRI research team (which aims to systematically measure and analyse the experience of discrimination by both students and staff in higher education) is made up of Tana Bao, Romane Blassel, Géraldine Bozec, Marguerite Cognet, Fabrice Dhume, Camille Gillet, Abdellali Hajjat, Christelle Hamel, Hanane Karimi, Cécile Rodrigues and Pierre-Olivier Weiss.
