Colonisation and the war of independence were central to the construction of the nation and state in both France and Algeria. In a revolutionary outburst, Algeria heroised the people who rose up as one, while France struggled to welcome those who had experienced colonial Algeria. In both societies, all the players involved express a variety of, sometimes antagonistic, narratives and demands for remembrance. Each takes the fragment in which it recognises itself, participating in the construction of a memory-puzzle, outside a global vision of what was the colonial enterprise. In the midst of current events in the field of remembrance, this book offers a way out of the impassioned terrain of political instrumentalisation and shifts the focus to the workings of the past, which is still being passed on and is still in motion. The contributions gathered here examine the traces of colonisation, the War of Independence and their memories in different fields and different environments. A necessary approach that opens up a new field and renews the debate.
