Summary
"A lawyer, a policeman, a nurse, a bookseller, a factory worker, a teacher, a banker, a farmer, a middle-class citizen from the upper middle-class neighbourhoods or a second-generation immigrant from a working-class housing estate... Fourteen portraits of ordinary voters confronted with politics, the 2017 elections and their candidates. Interviewed on a number of occasions up to 2021, they reveal their views on politics, their perception of what is at stake in the election and, beyond that, a vivid picture of contemporary French society, the objective (mis)chances of each individual and the social imaginaries that structure it.
Through these portraits, the logic of electoral choices is revealed. The fruit of social roots and long-standing loyalties, it articulates multiple rationales. Far from the simplifications of opinion polls, these portraits shed light on the complex motivations behind voting. They reveal a system of political and social likes and dislikes that say as much about the political system as they do about the divisions in French society.
