Academic work

My teaching activities began during the second year of my thesis, in 1997, with lectures on theories and methods in sociology, and in the sociology of the arts and culture, I was recruited in various universities and training courses (Aix-Marseille I, Aix-Marseille III, Arles, Nîmes, Montpellier, École des beaux-arts de Marseille). I have had two part-time ATER contracts (one at the University of Aix-Marseille III, the other at the University Lumière de Lyon 2 in an IUP 'Métiers des arts et de la culture').

In 2006, I won a competitive examination to become a senior lecturer at the University of Picardie Jules-Verne in Amiens, in the field of 'General Sociology'. I worked there for 4 years, then joined the Cultural Mediation sector of the ALLSH UFR at Aix Marseille University in 2010, after passing a competitive examination for a post in 'Cultural mediation: art, audiences and cultural policy'. In 2020 I passed the competitive examination to become a university professor and joined the sociology department of Aix Marseille University.

In my teaching approach, teaching and research are very closely linked, and I pay particular attention to bringing knowledge from the field and involving students in the research programmes that I coordinate (for example, in 2013, I involved students from the different sectors in which I worked in the research programme on Marseille Provence 2013, European Capital of Culture and as part of the PubLiCS project I work with and recruit students). I am particularly interested in the methodological and pragmatic aspects of university work, innovative teaching methods, the use of digital technology and the reflective dimension of knowledge transmission. I favour teaching methods such as the project-based approach and flipped classes, and I work with digital tools (files shared with students, creation of course support websites, etc.).

Level, type of course and location

The levels at which I have taught and continue to teach range from the first year of a bachelor's degree to a doctorate. All these courses are divided between tutorials, lectures with a maximum of 350 students, or seminar-type days. They take place in UFRs and departments from different disciplines and sectors (sociology, shs and arts in particular).

Scientific coordinator, programme manager

Scientific manager of the project PubLiCS (Publics des Lieux Culturels et de la Science), a winning project in the Transfer call for "Partnerships with the socio-economic and cultural world" in 2023 (France 2030 Initiative d'Excellence d'Aix Marseille Université A*Midex).

Total budget : 517,000 euros

The aim of the PubLiCS (Publics des Lieux Culturels et de la Science) project is to bring together university research and the cultural world in order to: 1) produce a mutual transfer of knowledge and skills on the practices and audiences of culture (in all its forms); 2) implement strategies and produce mechanisms to effectively pursue an objective of cultural democratisation. The PubLiCS actions are based on three forms of transfer: 1/ the construction of qualitative and quantitative survey 'solutions' (modelled, replicable and adjustable) for understanding and monitoring audiences and identifying practices (for example, on the audiences and non-audiences of contemporary art in Marseille, for example on the occasion of the creation of a new third-party venue dedicated to maritime culture: les Consignes sanitaires or an event such as the Biennale de la Joliette, or even large-scale events such as the Cultural Olympics); 2/ modelling collaborative forms of science/society partnership in the field of culture to encourage the design, development and implementation of projects adapted to different situations, territories, projects and specific contexts; 3/ the development and design of innovative and exploratory mediation tools, formats and devices, in particular using digital technologies (such as interactive applications/terminals), tailored and territorialised for actual and potential audiences.

The notebook also keeps you up to date with news from the Observatoire des publics et des pratiques de la culture - Sciences et société.

The notebook was created at the end of the research programme on "Publics et pratiques culturelles - Marseille-Provence 2013, capitale européenne de la culture", in order to make the most of all the results produced and to distribute the summaries of the field surveys. It also includes publications on other territorial surveys conducted by the Laboratoire Méditerranéen de Sociologie.

Digital scientific production

production of a clip on "contemporary art in times of confinement" as part of Décrypteurs - a collection of short videos by researchers in the humanities and social sciences - 2020

On 14 March 2020, all exhibition venues will be required by decree to close their doors. Contemporary art is no exception, and like most sectors of activity in France, it will be closed for several months. Once the shockwaves have passed, however, artists, professionals and the general public will have to adapt and reinvent their practices to get through this confined period. How are contemporary art professionals reorganising? What are artists doing? How are audiences reorienting their practices? And what role will the Internet play in this unexpected and unprecedented situation? This is what we propose to decipher.

Research webdocumentary

Cultural mediation for very young audiences - a research webdocumentary - 2020

Creation of a research webdocumentary to disseminate and promote the results of a sociological study into the mediation and reception of theatre by very young children, carried out as part of the regional project. Our Inner Forests (created by Céline Schnepf and the company Un Château en Espagne, supported by Le Merlan - now ZEF - a national theatre scene located in the northern districts of Marseille). The webdoc is based on the creation of a 52-minute video, 4 to 5-minute video clips on the key themes of this study (mediation, emotion, territory), and a support site to promote all the data, results, resources and publications linked to this research. This form of digital and hybrid publication proposes to rearrange the results of the research according to a narrative developed thanks to the combined skills of a video artist, a web designer, a student in digital creation and the researchers involved in this study. The proposed format combines written, discursive and multimedia sections, and draws on the iconography and symbols created by the theatre company for Nos forêts intérieures.

Project team: Sylvia Girel, Ariane Richard-Bossez, Fanny Broyelle, Anthony Vincent (webdesigner), Corinne Ailliot (video researcher), Allessandré Petzer (digital creation student).

Winner of the "Aix-Marseille Université scientific culture projects grant" 2019 and supported by the university's scientific culture unit.
