Third places in the Aix-Marseille area: social configurations, audiences, non-publics and practices (2024-2025)

Research as part of the PubLiCS programme (A*Midex funding), supported by theObservatory of cultural audiences and practices

Summary: The primary objective of this action-research project is not to set up a survey 'about' but 'with' the region's third places, as part of a process of co-construction and knowledge transfer (from research to civil society and from civil society to research). The research is built around three axes: analysis of the ecosystem by mapping the players, typification of the third places by immersion in a selection of establishments and examination of the public and non-public by carrying out questionnaires in and around the third places.

Cultural practices of Aix-Marseille University students (2023-2024)

Research supported by theObservatory of cultural audiences and practicesin partnership with AMU's cultural and documentation services and the Antoine Vitez theatre.

Summary:A comprehensive, detailed survey, inside and outside the institution, taking account of outings as well as amateur practices, and integrating dimensions relating to digital culture and scientific culture, as part of an open science and data-sharing approach. The survey is divided into two phases: the first qualitative, with exploratory interviews and a survey of national surveys, and the second quantitative, with a questionnaire sent to a representative sample of students at Aix-Marseille University.

Interactive and immersive digital arts. A sociological approach to the updating of receptive experiences. The case of the Biennial of Digital Imaginations (2022-2023)

Research associated withObservatory of cultural audiences and practices (AMU-MESRI).

Summary : Largely inspired by the work of Jean-Claude Passeron and Emmanuel Pedler in The time given to paintings (1991), this research proposes to study the audiences for interactive and immersive digital arts, and the different forms that their receptive experiences can take. Based on a quantified ethnography of visits to the Biennial of Digital Imaginations taking place in Aix-en-Provence, Avignon and Marseille from November 2022 to January 2023, the scientific approach aims to combine analyses of works, audiences and receptions, in order to examine the way in which audiences and receptive experiences are or are not updated in the context of digital arts exhibitions.

Doctoral thesis (2018-2022)

Title of thesis : The democratisation of digital culture. The worlds of digital mediation and social inclusion (under the direction of Sylvia GirelUniversity Professor)

Summary : Based on the observation of digital inequalities, their close relationship with social inequalities, and the contemporary need to support citizens in appropriating the uses of digital tools, this thesis aims to understand and analyse the institution represented by digital mediation. Its main objective, digital inclusion, leads us to consider it as an inclusive pedagogical relationship aimed at regulating digital inequalities. If digital mediation's mission is to regulate these inequalities, if it takes place within a pedagogical relationship that socialises individuals, and if digital inequalities are strongly correlated with social inequalities, then digital mediation would be capable of social inclusion, of not just socialising digital tools but socialising them altogether.
