Axis 3 'Religion and Politics' includes Nadia HachimiProfessor of Political Science at the International University of Rabat in Morocco, who will present the issue "Economic Sovereignty and the Foundations of Power in Morocco" (African politics, n°171/172, 2023).

Issue summary:

Morocco today is saturated with references to economic sovereignty, as demonstrated by the handling of the September 2023 earthquake. This dossier, which forms the core of this double issue, aims to deconstruct this ambivalent and plural notion. It aims to highlight the diversity and subtlety of the political and economic issues behind the ever-increasing demands for sovereignty. By approaching sovereignty through its modalities, the Moroccan case sheds light on the places where power is exercised, ordinary political practices and representations of the political economy - in other words, the economic foundations of power. More specifically, the dossier looks at the various ways in which economic sovereignty is reinforced or asserted. It brings together contributions on local powers, the trajectories of businesses and entrepreneurs, the production and sale of foodstuffs or cannabis, and the activities of a national commission. All shed light on the importance, diversity and contingency of the sources of sovereignty, as well as the conflicts to which it gives rise.
