Presentation:
This anniversary issue, celebrating forty years of European Journal of International Migration (REMI), provides an opportunity to look back at the history of its scientific output, while continuing to publish the most recent research. Over the decades, the journal has asserted its intellectual anchorage around a triple requirement: scientific rigour, theoretical reflection and critical engagement. It has kept pace with the expansion of the field of study, while at the same time keeping abreast of the far-reaching changes in migration and contemporary societies. Since its creation, REMI has helped to structure the field of migration studies in Europe, while maintaining a constant openness to international and comparative perspectives. It has also been able to respond to public debates without ever abandoning the critical distance inherent in academic research. This issue looks back at the major intellectual trends that have marked her career, as well as the changes in research topics and methods. It highlights the diversity of approaches, the wealth of fields covered and the vitality of scientific collaborations. To celebrate forty years of publications is to recognise its contribution to the understanding of migration as a «total social fact», and to reaffirm its role as a platform for exchange, dissemination and critical debate on the transformations of the contemporary world.
