At 8am on 15 August 1944, the Allied troops landed in Provence. The American army, British commandos and a rearmed French army led by General de Lattre de Tassigny set off from the warships that were transporting them from the coasts of Italy and North Africa to the beaches of southern France. At Hyères, Toulon and Marseille, the German defences quickly gave way to the lightning advance of the Allied forces, joined by the Resistance fighters from the interior. Operation Anvil-Dragoon, which had been discussed for months, was a resounding success, despite the gruelling and deadly fighting, including for the civilian population.
For the first time, as close as possible to the events and supported by striking and often unpublished photographic archives, Claire Miot retraces these two weeks of fighting at the end of which the opposing forces were now moving towards Germany.
