"The teaching of the Catholic religion in Italy is a case study in the governance of religion in schools. The controversial quantification of enrolments since 1986 highlights the issues of categorisation and regulation using national and local indicators. The framing of enrolment in this course in terms of individual 'choice', linked to the rhetoric of 'religious culture', has had a lasting impact on monitoring and evaluation practices based on statistics, as well as on debates about the legitimacy of the subject".
