"Nicole Ramognino, professor emeritus, and Ariane Richard-Bossez, senior lecturer at the Centre méditerranéen de sociologie, de science politique et d'histoire (Mesopolhis), have made an original and groundbreaking contribution to general sociology at a time when it is experiencing fragmentation and hyperspecialisation in its research (Lahire, 2012). The main premise of this collective work is simple: knowledge is not just an object to be studied, it is at the foundation of the social, constituting 'a dimension of any sociological object, whatever its field of specialisation' (Ramognino, p. 39).

This review will first describe the historical and structural features of the sociological programme proposed in the book, before presenting the contributions focusing on categories and educational activities.
