This article sets out to show, in a step-by-step approach, why victimisation surveys are a useful way of gaining insight into the student 'world' in France. Why is it relevant to study student insecurity and victimisation? And what kind of knowledge can be gained? These are the questions we aim to answer. Based on recent changes in the number of students enrolled at university, and in the light of the security issues raised by contemporary changes, we propose to look again at victimisation surveys as an instrument for measuring delinquency and incivility. We note that French scientific literature provides little information on the reality of students' attitudes to safety issues. On this basis, we are seeking to demonstrate that Anglo-Saxon surveys can provide support and can thus be transposed to national campuses. At a time when discussions on campus security tend to conclude that a miracle solution is to make campuses impervious to their immediate environment, it would seem useful to have tools for measuring delinquency, incivilities and the fears of their users in order to better understand, better protect and better act. The scheduled end of the "Living Environment and Security" (CVS) survey is further justification for rethinking the tool and the areas in which it could be applied.
