Since the beginnings of cinema, moving images have been used to tell invented stories, fictions, as much as to deliver chronicles of reality, reports. The magic of framing, the interplay of scales and editing provide tremendous possibilities for giving substance to fictions produced by the imagination, just as the camera can attempt to replicate reality in detail in a documentary project concerned with authenticity. At first sight, only the second use of the image is of interest to the social sciences. This thematic issue complicates the distinction between fiction and documentary, and identifies a number of possibilities for research using fictional images (from the cinema, television or the Web). It also highlights the value of using fiction in social science research training.

The preparation of this dossier, led by Pascal Cesaro (Prism) and Pierre Fournier(Mesopolhis), was based in part on the Fifas programme and the associated seminar, supported by the Amidex foundation.
