Summary
As part of a collaborative research project investigating the effects of a scheme for distributing digital tablets and encouraging digital use in the classroom on the learning of Year 4 pupils, the aim was to take the opposite approach to the initial objective and consider the consequences of social background on pupils' relationship with digital culture. Using a sociocritical approach to digital education and the concept of digital capital, modelled on data from a questionnaire administered to pupils in Year 4, the dispositionalist hypothesis was tested on pupils' declared uses (reading, writing, information practices) and their evaluations of the Pix test. The results led to the conclusion that the digital skills acquired within the family environment were more prevalent and called into question the incentive system put in place at the school.
