Marseille, city of the world
The internationalisation of a fragmented metropolis
par Nicolas MAISETTI
Summary
Against a backdrop of intensifying international competition, cities are vying with one another in their strategies to raise their profile and improve their appeal. Marseille is no exception to the rule. This book analyses the international policies that aim to promote a new image of Marseille, welcoming investors, tourists and organisers of cultural and sporting events.
What facets of Marseille are being promoted to project the city and its region beyond local and national borders? What links is the city forging with its foreign counterparts? How is the Region promoting its interests in Brussels and securing European funding? What is at stake in hosting a World Bank office in Marseille? What are the effects of bidding for an international event on the reshaping of urban powers?
The book provides answers to these questions and analyses the conditions under which the internationalisation of Marseille, a fragmented metropolis, is possible.
