We are pleased to inform you that the thesis defence of Laurence Dufresne Aubertinentitled "The walls of indignation. Government by waiting and housing struggles in Algeria".will be held on Friday 11 October at 2pm at the Espace Philippe Séguin (room 101).
Summary: This thesis contributes to the political sociology of domination in Algeria. In a context where the perpetuation of the political order is seen as resulting either from the allocation of rents or from repression, I analyse how power is also exercised through political uses of time. Using the problems raised by housing as a starting point, I examine the ways in which the production of expectation and uncertainty is, on the one hand, an essential springboard for the government of the working classes, and on the other, a moment when ordinary relationships with the state are experienced and constructed. Through the daily experiences of the poorly housed, this research examines the equivocal practices of participation and the process of acquiring political skills that unfold in struggles to assert a right to housing in an authoritarian situation. To do this, I am drawing on a multi-site field study carried out in Algiers and Oran, based on observations and interviews with applicants for social housing and a range of institutional actors involved in the distribution of these resources.
