For this new session, the’axis 6 «Norms, deviances, knowledge of government».» receives Patrizia Pacini-Volpe, a researcher in political science (CERAPS - Université de Lille, groupe KAIROS - Université de Pise, CRHI - Université Côte-d'Azur), associated with MESOPOLHIS, who will be speaking on the following topic: «Women's detention between control, marginalisation and ignored needs».».
Summary of his speech:
The aim of this contribution is to highlight the salient aspects of inequality between women and men in the prison context and how the androcentric vision of the system can affect the quality of prison life for female inmates and worsen their treatment conditions. The low female crime rate in France has many causes and offers a variety of sociological and criminological interpretations. The under-representation of women points to overlapping conditioning processes, in particular society's harsh judgement of female prisoners. The judgement is still imbued with stereotypes and preconceived ideas that have their roots in patriarchal culture and in the increasingly insidious forms of control and oppression of women, despite the various moves towards emancipation and the affirmation of women's rights.
