Georges Granai (1922-1981) was a general sociologist as defined by the École française de sociologie. At the instigation of Georges Gurvitch, he founded the sociology department at the Faculty of Arts in Aix-en-Provence in 1961 and surrounded himself with a teaching team that helped to establish this general sociology regionally. His archives, consisting mainly of lectures and research reports, provide an exceptional record of developments in the profession of sociology and the way in which research subjects are viewed over more than two decades. The aim of this paper is to pave the way for a reflection on the contribution of these archives to the history of sociology.
