Details

Filmic Sociology explores the intellectual resources offered by the hybridisation of sociology and film: practising sociology, or other human sciences, through images and sound. In the age of the image, this essay is an invitation to sociological research, not only by mastering the discipline's approach, but also by learning the techniques (shooting and sound recording, de-rushing, editing, etc.) and writing for film. Film sociology thus contributes to the recognition of the sensitive and the situated point of view, in a discipline that has often kept them to itself.
Using concrete examples and a wealth of iconography, the authors analyse what it means to 'think through images', set out the various stages involved in making a sociological documentary, and use sociological film to question representations of reality, particularly what remains invisible in the social world. The result is a reflective look at the theories and practices presented, to better equip the sociologist-director of documentaries.
