Speaker: Marie-Pierre Ulloa: Marie-Pierre Ulloa, a graduate of Sciences Po Paris and holder of a doctorate from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), teaches at Stanford University. Her work focuses on the cultural and intellectual history of contemporary North Africa and the French-speaking world.

The new American dream: from North Africa to California
In this urban ethnography that takes her from San Francisco to Silicon Valley, from Los Angeles to San Diego, Marie-Pierre Ulloa looks at the North African diasporas that have settled in California.
By bringing together voices from different genders, social classes and generations, she shows how North Africans are living the American dream in the Far West that is California. Far from the stigma attached to the heavy colonial legacy between France and North Africa...
Based on around a hundred interviews and a field study that ranged from mosques to concert halls, from association premises to kindergartens, from festivals to 'ethnic' restaurants, Marie-Pierre Ulloa sheds light on the construction of a Californian Maghrebinity that is different from that of people of North African origin in France.
It also includes Jews from North Africa, who are distinct from it but also part of it. Apart from gastronomy, what unites these populations is the French language, their lingua franca along with English. Without being angelic, the vision offered in this book is one of successful integration, without glossing over the failures of the American dream.
