Le Michel Seurat Prize was set up by the CNRS in June 1988 to honour the memory of this researcher, a specialist in the Arab world, who died in tragic circumstances. Its aim is to provide financial support each year to a young researcher from a European, Middle Eastern or North African country, thereby helping to promote mutual knowledge and understanding between French society and the Arab world.

Since 2017, the organisation of the Prize has been delegated to the GIS "Middle East and Muslim Worlds", in partnership with IISMM-EHESS and Orient XXI.
