Théotime Chabre - "In Cyprus, the North/South rivalry is now being played out on economic grounds".

"The head of the UN mission in Cyprus is today receiving the presidents of the two Cypriot entities: that of the Republic of Cyprus, in the south of the island, and that of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Cyprus has been divided in two since 1974, when the Turkish army invaded the north of the island in response to a coup d'état by Greek Cypriot nationalists who wanted to annex it to Greece.
So for 45 years, diplomacy has been trying to resolve the differences between North and South. A lot has happened since then: the Republic of Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004. The rivalry is no longer on military grounds, but increasingly on economic ones, and on each side's objective of becoming a 'destination'."
