This book analyses the indictments of the phenomena of public impropriety, which extend to the stigmatisation of certain cities as corrupt and corrupting. It explores different periods (from the end of the nineteenth century to the present day) and several European and North American areas: the American cities of the political machines (New York, Boston, Chicago), Glasgow in the United Kingdom, Montreal in Canada, Naples in Italy and Marseille in France. Marseille in France is given special treatment, with 4 chapters looking at the invention and consolidation of its bad reputation over a very long period.
