publication

Jean-Claude Chamboredon (1938-2020) is a leading figure in contemporary French sociology. As early as 1967, he marked the revival of sociology in France with his work The profession of sociologist co-written with Pierre Bourdieu and Jean-Claude Passeron.
Jean-Claude Chamboredon's work makes a decisive contribution to a critical sociology of territory.
This book, translated into Portuguese, brings together articles published between 1982 and 2004, including "Construction sociale des populations" published in the book History of urban Francewhich is an updated version of his 1970 article "Proximité spatiale et distance sociale. Les grands ensembles et leur peuplement", one of the most widely cited urban studies.
The articles in this book examine, from a variety of angles, the mechanisms that help to create a sense of belonging to a territory, against any essentialist or nationalist tendencies.
This collection of articles is highly topical in its ability to revisit the blurred boundaries between town and country, to explore the impasses of a reified way of thinking, to study the co-presence of different groups in the same place and the forms of multiple belonging to the territory.
