Two months after taking office, the mayor of Étampes is investing 400,000 euros in upgrading video surveillance cameras and acquiring new models capable of detecting heat sources.

"Video surveillance is a way of playing politics. It's like saying vote for me and you'll be safe," explains the sociologist. This type of system may well lend a helping hand from time to time, but at the end of the year, in all these cities, we find that video has only helped to solve 1 to 3 % of the investigations. It's the same everywhere, and British and American researchers have come to the same conclusion.
