Summary:

Since the seminal work of Abdelmalek Sayad, the reference to absence has been used less and less in migration studies. This marker of social ties at a distance survives only in the narrative of its decomposition as a result of technological advances in general and digital migration studies in particular, which are changing lifestyles and transforming the relationship with the distant. However, this observation does not apply to the English-speaking academic field, which has made it an object at the crossroads of multiple fields of research. This article presents a theoretical review of the main works that structure this field of research and proposes a relational approach to absence as the common foundation of mobility beyond inequalities of access.
