Title of thesis : Between institutional renewal and reproduction, museum professionals put to the test of changing cultural practices: the case of Mucem (under the direction of Sylvia GirelUniversity Professor).
Summary This thesis shows how museum professionals, by seeking to develop a new museum model and renew cultural mediation, are participating in the reconfiguration of cultural legitimacy. Museum professionals tend to consider that the museum institution must transform itself in order to adapt to contemporary audiences. The digital and playful tools that have been developed in many museums over the course of 2010 embody these attempts at transformation. However, they also raise a tension for those working in the field of visitor services, between showing the way for renewal and reproducing institutional routines. The case of the Mucem (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisation) provides an acute illustration of the issues involved in renewing the established Parisian art museum model, given its specific place in the French museum landscape: a national institution but decentralised to Marseille; a museum of society; a recently opened establishment. We show that the renewal of cultural mediation is part of a standardised institutional framework and a "miserabilist" conception of the public. Digital and playful devices embody a new standard of 'eclectic' cultural legitimacy. This norm, which is specific to the middle and upper classes to which professionals working with the public belong, values cultural otherness, rejects the scholastic form and appropriates popular repertoires in a distinctive way. By integrating itself into the museum, this type of system ultimately contributes to the blurring of cultural hierarchies, which are less perceptible than before but still persist.
