Justice, virtue and political trust seem to speak different languages. From tolerance to distrust, what do these cases say about our collective relationship with justice, probity and power?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"<em>The founding moment in the history of political corruption, or in the politicisation of the issue of corruption, was the French Revolution.<\/em>\u201dsays Fr\u00e9deric Monier. \u201c<em>In Robespierre's eyes, the only remedy against corruption was virtue<\/em>\u201dand the latter could not \u201c<em>exercise without terror<\/em>\u201d. Corruption\u201c<em>has many faces<\/em>\u201dand\u201c<em>one of these faces is electoral corruption<\/em>\u201dsince we \u201c<em>invented in the 19th century a form of government based on election<\/em>\u201d. With the enlargement of the electorate, \u201c<em>fraudulent methods of obtaining votes are uncovered<\/em>\u201d. It is \u201c<em>to buy the honorary distinction more quickly, as it were<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, corruption is not only political, it can also be economic. \u201c<em>Since the 1780s, the French have also associated corruption with agiotage, a form of stock market speculation.<\/em>\u201dexplains Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Monier.
