The American army, British commandos and a rearmed French army led by General de Lattre de Tassigny set off from the warships that were transporting them from the coasts of Italy and North Africa to the beaches of southern France. At Hy\u00e8res, Toulon and Marseille, the German defences quickly gave way to the lightning advance of the Allied forces, joined by the Resistance fighters from the interior.
