The aim is to clarify the new possibilities for research using fictional images in ethnographic surveys. The aim is to move on from analysing a research opportunity to formalising an approach that is both methodological (enriching scientific practices) and didactic (creating resources that can be re-used by researchers and doctoral students in other fields). The aim is to encourage synergy with socio-economic players and to propose an economically and legally viable model that can be applied to various scientific fields.

The FIFAS programme is being run by the PRISM and LAMES laboratories as part of the A*Midex «Pépinière» projects, and is an extension of a collaboration between two researchers, one in sociology and the other in film. They began by conducting an experiment to design an ethnographic survey based on archive footage from French television, a 1960s soap opera about the nuclear world. This first phase of research was carried out between 2013 and 2016 as part of the Nucléaire et société locale (NUXOLO) programme, led by LAMES and LESA in a partnership between AMU, CNRS and INA, with funding from the Needs Challenge of the CNRS's Mission à l'interdisciplinarité. By showing extracts from a soap opera depicting the lives of nuclear workers to people now living near the research and development centre where the fiction is set, we elicited stories from them that help them understand what it means to come and work in this civil and military industry and live nearby. We took advantage of reminiscences provoked by the emotional proximity of these people's experience to one or other aspect of the reality presented in the soap opera, in particular with particularly precise images of the work. And given that it's fiction, the respondents are free to describe them as well-intentioned or fanciful. In this way, the survey system makes it possible to go beyond the abstract representations of the public debate on this controversial subject or the silence behind which people living near nuclear power stations sometimes prefer to hide when they are convinced that they cannot be understood by the people they talk to.

Publications

The main publications associated with this research are available here.

Find out more about the CNRS challenge: NUXOLO - Nuclear power and local society

Research is coordinated by Pierre Fournier and Pascal Cesaro, researcher at the PRISM laboratory.

Financing

Contract as part of the Nuclear energy, risks and society the Nuclear, Energy, Environment, Waste and Society Challenge of the CNRS Interdisciplinary Mission

Publications

The main publications associated with this research are available here

Presentation

By spreading over a limited number of sites, often located in sparsely populated areas, the nuclear industry has marked the sudden conversion of territories to a strange modernity, the meaning of which has not been self-evident and has probably not been unanimously shared at all times by the local populations, whether or not they work in the sector. Over and above the silence that often characterises these populations on the subject in response to requests from interlocutors who are very external to the area, the aim of this research programme is to examine the self-image that is at stake for local populations in their daily confrontation with nuclear energy: the friction with certain people (workers, non-workers, from the site, from far away, moral authorities such as teachers, doctors, or simple neighbours...), the friction with certain experiences (at work, outside, on the occasion of incidents, accidents, intervening on site, on other nuclear sites, faced with the circulation of information, faced with the concealment of others...).

To do this, we propose to make the most of a happy archive, a soap opera produced for ORTF in the 1960s and depicting the lives of civil nuclear workers in Provence. By showing extracts to people now living near the centre filmed in the soap opera, we hope to encourage them to tell stories that include anecdotes and personal experience of the local development of the nuclear industry. It's a way of going beyond simple abstract representations or the more or less conscious recycling of ready-made discourse on the subject. It may also be a way of taking advantage of reminiscences triggered by the emotional closeness of the respondents' personal experience to one or other aspect of the fictional reality presented in the soap opera.

This research approach is the subject of complementary work exploring new writing for the social sciences as part of a programme entitled «De la fiction faire science» (From fiction to science), supported by Amidex, which has resulted in a interactive documentary which can be used for research teaching purposes.

The aim of the FIFAS programme is to examine the conditions under which this innovative research approach, which uses fictional images as part of an ethnographic interview survey, can be replicated to investigate configurations of speech that are prevented by a highly polarised public debate, as in the case of nuclear power.

The programme includes :
- A seminar identifying the heuristic potential of this approach and the problems likely to arise in its implementation, as well as ways of overcoming them, leading to the writing of an issue of the journal Images du travail / Travail des images.
Find out more about the «De la fiction faire science» seminar: 2018-2019

What can be done with images in social science research? The aim will be to examine «good practice» in the re-use of audiovisual archives when setting up a video-elicitation system in the social sciences. The aim is not to propose a model that needs to be exactly replicated, but rather to help everyone to think about an adaptation that could be useful for their research by incorporating their specific characteristics.

The workshop took place in two stages at INA's premises in Marseille. The first stage took place on 11 September and focused on the conditions and constraints of image re-use, with participants experimenting with this methodology by building up a personal corpus of a few archives (using INA indexing tools or other types of images). The second stage took place on 26 September, and involved thinking about the logic of reassembling images from the selected material and discussing viewing methods with the interviewees in order to involve them as fully as possible in the research.

Contacts : Pascal Cesaro (Prism), Pierre Fournier (Mesopolhis)

- The construction of an interactive documentary to encourage and support researchers in this direction, based on the example of research using the soap opera Les Atomistes. An interactive documentary as a guide

Research experience (see supra Nuxolo) led Pierre Fournier to conduct biographical interviews in sociology, starting them off in a special way: by viewing images from a television drama, chosen and edited with the help of Pascal Cesaro, a film researcher at PRISM. As part of the complementary contract From fiction to science, This research, which was extensively filmed during its deployment, was analysed in order to reflect on the conditions for its replication on other subjects presenting the same type of speech issues made difficult by the polarisation of the public debate. This was an opportunity to think about how to present it in an interactive setting that would be suitable for a variety of audiences. We see the research kitchens, a researcher experimenting with respondents from different social backgrounds, reflecting on the system he is trying to use, exchanging views with other researchers on the subject, trying to present his research to the respondents he has met, etc.

From fiction to science. A video-elicitation experiment to get out of a situation where speech is prevented.

The interactive documentary is hosted by the HumaNum platform.
