In the 16th century, travelling artists set off with their watercolour boxes to produce the first visual reports of Mediterranean landscapes and populations, in Italy, Palestine or Egypt. Today, photography and video have not completely replaced this artistic technique: in constrained situations where photography and filming are not possible, such as during trials, in prison, or even in certain situations of war, drawing and watercolour allow artists and draughtsmen to invent ways of representing the immediate. At this round table, researchers and artists are invited to reflect on how these artistic techniques can be adapted to situations of violence and constraint, based on their own work and creations. What is the right distance to adopt in order to bear witness to the instantaneous, between in situ representation and evocation based on memory? This round-table discussion is in keeping with the museum's ethnographic tradition of combining the study of techniques and know-how with the viewpoints of contemporary artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
