The conjugal trajectories of young Europeans have changed since the late 1960s. The amount of time spent without being married or having children has increased over the generations. However, the desire for a long-lasting relationship is still common today, and the increase in divorce has not eradicated the desire and choice to marry. At the crossroads of the sociology of couples and the demography of the family, this thesis examines the relationship between young people's commitment to marriage by comparing France and Italy. These two countries present contrasting demographic and social situations in terms of entry into adult life, fertility and marriage. We characterise the 'taste for commitment' by simultaneously studying the trajectories, intentions and opinions of young people. To do this, we use several major quantitative surveys representative of the population: Generations and Gender Survey, Study of Individual and Marital Careers, Family and Social Survey. Using a variety of statistical methods (logistic regression, survival analysis, etc.), we identify the crucial role of social factors in marital commitment in each country. A typology of commitment trajectories is drawn up on the basis of a multidimensional sequence analysis, in order to combat a uniform view of youth. The multi-level models also take account of the central role played by the living environment in which young people develop, with the introduction of analysis variables at regional level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
