The second Mesopolhis meeting will take place on Friday 22 November 2024, from 2pm to 4.30pm, at the MMSH (Amphith\u00e9\u00e2tre).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have the pleasure of welcoming the doctor of sociology Julie Ancian<\/strong>who will present his book Les violences inaudibles. Stories of infanticide<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>(\u00c9ditions du Seuil, 2022).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion will be led by Nathalie Chapon<\/strong><\/a> (MESOPOLHIS) and Anne Kletzlen<\/strong><\/a> (MESOPOLHIS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"How can a mother kill her babies? In a society that idealises motherhood, women who kill their newborns within hours of birth provoke horror and incomprehension. They are \"monsters\" or \"mad\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julie Ancian's investigation runs counter to these conventional images. Her book is based on the exceptional accounts she gathered from women convicted of these crimes. Far from pointing to a mental pathology, their accounts bear witness to lives of great hardship and distress: precariousness, domestic violence, isolation, lack of family support, etc. Contrary to popular belief, not all women are guaranteed access to family planning services, effective contraception or abortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet the justice system, in dealing with these very specific homicides, is blind to social inequalities and particularly lenient towards violent men. Observations of trials and interviews with magistrates and lawyers reveal that the judicial institution perpetuates a misleading discourse about the free disposal of their bodies that all women enjoy. The author is right to make the following observation: the violence that affects women's reproductive choices is still largely unheard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After working for ten years in humanitarian NGOs, Julie Ancian now conducts research into health inequalities, gender and violence. As a sociologist, she contributed to the work of the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church. She won the 2018 thesis prize from the \u00c9cole des hautes \u00e9tudes en sciences sociales for her research into the murder of newborn babies.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
