Presentation:

The aim of this thematic dossier is to examine the involvement of religious actors in environmental issues, and more generally the practices and discourses that link religious commitment with engagement in environmental issues. It focuses in particular on two phenomena: from the perspective of activism, the dual process of the reshaping of religious commitment and its hybridisation with environmental commitments; and, from an institutional perspective, the participation of religious institutions in political debates on environmental issues. The general hypothesis is that the dual process of reshaping and hybridisation of religious actors’ commitments has an impact on their attitudes, on how they define their social and political participation and, by extension, on the religious institutions to which they claim affiliation. In this introduction to the thematic dossier, the aim is first and foremost to situate it within the existing literature on the hybridisation of ecological and religious commitments in political science, by highlighting its contributions to the analysis of the ways in which religious actors participate in and position themselves in relation to environmental debates and policies. Secondly, the introduction seeks to foster a dialogue between the articles by identifying, within their analyses, the trajectories, discourses and frames of reference of religious actors in the field of ecology that can explain the various ways in which they have undergone ecological conversion.
